アメリカの人気番組 SESAME STREETセサミストリート の本 STORY LAND のご紹介です。

セサミ・ストリートは、以前は、日本でも放映されていましたが、アメリカでは４１年目に入る今年も楽しく放送され、全世界で視聴されているようです（全世界でおよそ８００万人が見ているらしいです）。
日本でも、どうにかすると、見れるのかな？


BigBird を懐かしく思い出される方も、少なくないと思われます。

私の持っている「Sesame Street STORY LAND」は、１９８６年当時の少し古い本ですが、１４ものお話を集めたお得用本です。
正直に申しますと、私は、セサミストリートを放送当時ほとんど見ていないので、彼らの全ラインナップを知らないのですが、この本で、たぶん当時の全員に会うことができたと思っています。
現在のセサミストリートのホームページからは姿を消している、（おそらく象の一種の）Snuffie にも会えました。

☆☆
セサミストリートの読み物は、今でもほとんどそうだと思うのですが、この本に収録されている物語には、難しい言葉がほとんど出てきません。
ややこしい言い回しも皆無です。
アメリカでの対象年齢が低いからだと思いますが、アメリカで日常的に使われている言葉による表現、ほんとうにわかりやすい表現が用いられています。
逆にいえば、読み進むだけで、英語の自然な日常表現が学べる本、といってもよいかもしれません。

ですから、中学２年生ぐらいでも、正直いって、単語に関してはそれほど頻繁に辞書を使うことなく、読み進められると思います。文法的にも、中学で習わないようなものは、あまり出てこない感じに思います。

アマゾンで検索したところ、この本と同一の本は既になかったのですが、個別の物語本（同種類の読み物本）は、たくさん入手可能なようです。

では、この本の中から、二つ、ちょっと長くなりますが、お借りしてきます。

「Don’t worry , snufflie」
Big Bird と snufflie の楽しいキャンプ生活が始まります。







One hot summer day, a tall yellow bird named Big Bird and a big fully Snuffle-upagus named Snufflie climbed on to the Nomber 6 Sesame Street bus. Big Bird had a backpack on his back. It was stuffed with two sleeping bags, food, some pots and pans, and a few dishes. Snufflie was carrying a long pole wrapped with canvas. He held it tightly in his snuffle as he made his way to the back of the bus, saying “Excuse me “ and “Pardon me “. He was being very careful not to bump into anyone.

stuffed with：詰め込む、　Snuffle-upagus(スナッフル・アパガス：こういう種類の動物という設定、と思います。毛のふさふさとした象なのですが・・・)、　 in his snuffle：彼の鼻に巻きつけて、　as he made his way to the back of the bus(バスの後ろに向かって進む際に make one’s way to~ ～に向かって進む) 、　He was being very careful not to bump into anyone：誰かのところに突っ込んでいかないように、とても注意深い状態を保って）

“ Now let’s go find that place to swim!” said Big Bird.
“ Okay,” said Snuffie, and he followed Big Bird down the path to the lake.
“ Let’s just walk across these stones, “ Big Bird said.
“ Gee, Bird , “ Snuffie said.” They look awfully slippery. Why don’t we stay on the path with the orange signs like Joan told us to?
“ Don’t worry, Snuffie,” Big Bird said. “This is a short cut. Watch me!”
Suffie watched as Big Bird stepped on the first stone.
SPLASH ! He fell into the water.
“Quick ! “ Snuffie cried. “ Grab onto my snuffle and I’ll pull you out.”
In a Snuffle-upagus second, Big Bird was out of the water and on dry land again.
“ I think we’d better stay on the path this time, “ Big Bird said.
“ Then you won’t be worried, Snuffie”

（that place to swim：（その）泳ぐ場所、Joan（キャンプサイトの管理人で、２人に、orange signに沿って歩いてゆけば泳げる池につく、とのアドバイスをくれた人）、Let’s just walk across these stones: 飛び石づたいに横切って歩いてゆこうぜ、　 Why don’t we stay on the path with the orange signs like Joan told us to：Joanが言って（教えて）くれたように、オレンジの標識に沿った道から外れずに行こうよ、　Watch me：まあ見てなよ、　I’ll pull you out：（池から）君を引き上げるから、　In a Snuffle-upagus second：スナッフル・アパガス時間にしてほどなく、Then you won’t be worried, Snuffie:それなら心配ないだろう、なあ、スナッフィ。）

「Ernie and Bert’s Summer Vacation」
アーニーとバートの夏休みです。二人はどこへ出かけるのでしょうか？

One hot, streamy afternoon at 123 Sesame Street, Ernie sat looking through his collection of travel folders. He was trying to figure out where he and Bert should go for their summer vacation.
Suddenly, Bert rushed in. He had just come from Bennie’s Bargain Basement and a sale on rubbur thong beach sandals.

(looking through：目を通しながら、　rushed in：（飛び込むように）入ってきた、had just come from Bennie’s Bargain Basement and a sale on rubbur thong beach sandals：ちょうど、Bennieベニーのバーゲン場でのラバーヒモ・ビーチサンダルのバーゲンセールから帰ってきた)

Ernie and Bert piled all their things in to their car and they were off. Bert was at the wheel. Ernie sat beside him, strumming his ukulele.
“ this is the life , old buddy,” said Ernie.” I can feel that warm, silky sand between my toes already.”
“Um, I hope it doesn’t rain like last year, “  Bert said cautiously.
“ Not a chance ! “ said Ernie.

( they were off：彼らは出発した、　at the wheel：運転して(ステアリングホイールのところで→ステアリングを握って→運転して)、　strumming his ukulele：ウクレレをかきならしながら、　I can feel that warm, silky sand between my toes already. 暖かい絹のような砂粒が足の指の間にはさまっているのを、もうすでに感じとれる気分だよ、　Not a chance：その見込みはないよ→（ここのニュアンスでは）→そんなことめったにあるもんじゃないよ)
