Make Believe & Me 絵本シリーズ

今回は、Make Believe & Me 絵本シリーズ　（BARBARA ALEXANDER）を
ご紹介します。


この絵本シリーズは、４冊出ています。
サイズは、写真のとおり、一番大きな絵本サイズです
（普通サイズの、当方お気に入りのアメリカ国歌シオリ、と比べてみて下さい）。

ある古い家にすむ、お祖母さんGranny Roseと孫たちT.J.  &  Katie を中心とするストーリーです。
主人公たちです。

（１）A Furnace for Castle　Thistewart
（２）The Mysterious Disappearance of Ragsby
（３）A Little Bigalow Story
（４）Muddle－Mole and His Exploding Birthday Party
（１）～（４）いずれもアマゾンで現在入手可能ですが、一部新品が入手しにくくなっている状況のようです。

当方は、うち２冊しか持っていないのですが、いずれも、ほのぼのとしたファンタジー世界が展開され、楽しい物語となっています。

物語の舞台設定も、現実のようでいて、テディベアも犬も猫もお話をするという相当のファンタジー世界なのですが、Make-Believe によって、さらに不思議でステキな世界が扉を開けるという運びです。

では、さっそく、この舞台へおじゃましてみましょう。

第１巻 (1)は、雪景色の冬が舞台設定です。




（読み易さのため、以下では実際の本と異なり、適宜行間を空けています。）

Granny Rose's old house looked like a birthday cake.
The outside was all gleamy and icing-white, with snow everywhere.

The inside was always filled with the sweet smells of Granny's cooking.
Especialy this cold winter day. Granny had warmed sweet apple cider with cinnamon sticks. Everyone had gathered in the parlor close to a cozy fire. But soon T.J.  and Katie tred of their picture-puzzles and games of checkers.

Looking out the window at the deep, fluffy snow.
" Let's build a beautiful snow castle instead," said T.J., putting on his heavy jaket and cap.

They built their snow castle in Granny's front yard...and as they rolled and packed and patted the snow, they began to play "Make-Believe." Make-Believing was something Katie and T.J. on certain special days, and today felt like one of those days....

"My toes have never been this froze! " complained T.J.'s teddy bear, Ragsby. "If I'd known we were going to make-believe ourselves in to a 'frigerator' I would have worn my boots and earmuffs."

"Me too," moaned Cassandra,the cat.  "I wish I had remenbered my mittens! "

Mudpie, the dog, had brought Granny's big black umbrella. But it did little keep the blowing snow off their heads.

" I think I see something up ahead!" T.J. spoke through chattering teeth.
" Let's hurry! If it's a house we can warm ourselves there! " Katie said.

As they came closer, they discovered that the shape was not a warm, fiendly house at all, but something much larger.

Far above them was the cold, dark tower of an enormous castle!  In many places, the building stones had crumbled away, leaving walls no longer able to keep out the wind and snow.

"Is this a 'Dracula' kind of place?" asked Ragsby in an "afraid"voice.
"It does like haunted!" whispered Katie, inching closer to T.J.

さらにお城の中・外でのエキサイティングなお話が展開し、ナント！ドラゴンも登場するのですが、
そこは残念ながら、全部をお知らせできないところでして。

全員無事に、お城から、Grnny Rose　の前庭に戻ってまいります。

Back in granny Rose's  yardfront, T.J. and katie put the finishing touches on their snow castle.
" I love it when we make-believe," said T.J.
" Me, too," said Katie, shivering.
" T.J.! Katie! " called granny Rose from the  house.
" How about some hot apple cider? "
" Here we come!  shouted T.J. and Katie.

続きまして、もう一冊です。
（２）The Mysterious Disappearance of Ragsby
今回は、T.J.の大切なお友達：テディベアのRagsby が行方不明に、というお話です。表紙を見ると、シャロック・ホームズの格好をした「犬」がいるみたいなのですが。

 

季節は春になりました。

Granny Rose's house looked like a birthday cake.

This morning. T.J. and Katie smelled the cinnamon toast even before  they opened their eyes.
" Get up, Ragsby! " said T.J.  "Gran's making breakfast! "

T.J. reached for his much-loved teddy bear. but Ragsby wasn't in his usual place  on the pillow.
"It's morning, sleepy bear! Are you hiding? " T.J. threw back the blanket - no Ragsby !

Frantically, T.J. looked under the bed and in the closet. Ragsby was still nowhere to be found.
Near tears, T.J. dashed down the stairs. Neither katie nor Granny Rose had seen the little bear.

Granny put her arm around him. " Have some breakfast, honey. Then we'll all help you find Ragsby."
"Something's wrong! " he said. " I have to find him! " With that, the boy ran out the back door.
Katie raced after him, shouting, " Wait for me, T.J."

They said "good-bye" and "thank you anyway"to Mr.montgomery.
Sadly, they started back toward the road.
"hope you find your little bear soon, son," Mr.montgomery called after them.

"Let's make-believe some important detectives to help us find Ragsby," said Katie, trying to cheer up T.J.
Make-believe was something Katie and T.J. did at very special times, and the mysterious disappearance of Ragsby was a very special time if ever there was one.

When katie took T.J.'s hand on front of Mr.montgomery's crumbling old garage, the make-believing bagan...

A raspy voice whispered. "Psssst! Come here!"
Standing just inside the dark doorway of the cluttered old building was Jeff Cooper!（註：モンゴメリ氏のワキでだらしなくイネムリしていた飼い犬）
He was dressed in the famous checkered coat and double-brimmed hat of the great detective " Sherlock Bones." Beside him crouched Dirty Willie（註：同氏のところに居ついている、みすぼらしい猫）,wearing the tall,batted hat of Bones' trusted assistant, "Dr.Whatsit."

Sherlock Bones announced, " We must prceed at once to the 'scene of the crime' to serch for clues in the Strange Case of the Disappearing Bear Friend! "

They rushed to Granny's house. In T.J.'s room, Sherlock Bones took a real magnifying glass from his coat.
"Hmmmmmmmmm," he said, inspecting Ragsby's shoes. Then he peered at the windowsill, and said "Hmmmmmmm" again.
"I s'pose that tree was there last nigth,too...I have it!
Everybody outside-now! "

Under T.J.'s window, Bones said, "A-ha! " and pointed to an enormous footprint in the soft earth by the tree trunk.
Katie began to cry. "A monster took Ragsby! "
"Ah, this broken gardenia bush means he went this way...Come on!called Bones.

Sherlock Bones の名推理で、重要な手がかりを見つけた一行ですが、
残念ながら、ここでは、この後の一連の全顛末をお知らせできないわけでありまして。
「とてつもなく大きな足跡」ということは、怪物が出てきそうなんですが、ですね。
もちろん、Ragsbyは無事に戻ってまいります。
顛末が気になって、眠れない方は、買って読まれるのがベストですね。

やはり探偵は猫より犬のイメージですね。

日本でも昔、「名探偵ホームズ」というアニメでは、
登場人物が犬に置き換えられてました。

マチャさん、ありがとうございます。

Sherlock Bones なのですね。
この物語のメインのところ（：テディベアの救出＆その後の騒動）は、実は、この後に出てくるので、最初はそちらを抜き出していたのですが・・・。
どうしても、ですね、このSherlock Bones が頭に残ってしまって、これを入れようかどうしようか悩んで、この記事は、連休中に２回、書き直したのです。

この本はアマゾンでも新品が品切れになっていまして、ずっと、ご紹介をどうしようかと思っていまして、ですね。
でも、面白い絵本ですので、思い切ってですね。

「名探偵ホームズ」というアニメ、全く知りませんでした。
犬ですか。
まあ、赤川次郎さんは猫にしていますけど、イメージ的には、当方も、犬のほうが探偵らしい感じがします。猫だと、肝心のときに、どこにいるのかわからない気もしますし。
犬の綿密な捜査をとるか、猫のインスピレーション・カンをとるか、という感じでしょうか。
「犬の探偵」が主人公になっている、子供向けの洋書児童書「OSBone Mystery」というのがありまして、なかなかの探偵ぶりです。たぶん、これはそのうちブログに登場すると思います。

当方、シャーロキアンというほどではないですが、ホームズ物はほとんど読んでいるのですが（むろん、翻訳でです）、やっぱりこれだけのものとなると、外国でも、アチコチに、ホームズ物を基にしたちょっとしたサブキャラクターが出てくるみたいですね。

次回ご紹介作品は、偶然にも、子供向けミステリーの予定です。ジグソーパズルの好きな「JIGSAW JONES」という少年が主人公のミステリー物です。

84年から85年に放送されたアニメで、宮崎駿さんも
何話か監督を務めています。

やはり猫だと気まぐれすぎるんでしょうねえ・・・
それが猫の良さでもありますが。

名探偵ホームズの映像、ありました。
ダ・カーポの主題歌が印象的でした。
「空からこぼれたストーリー」という曲名、
とっても素敵です。

ホームズはその後の文学などへの影響が
多大ですね。

マチャさん、名探偵ホームズの映像、歌、堪能しました。
ありがとうございます。
そんなに前だとはとても思えない、アニメ映像です。

犬ですね。それにしても、どうして、こういう感じのものを思いつくのでしょうか？犬種によって、人柄を使い分けている部分もあるのでしょうか。
まあ、ハドソン夫人の犬が、とてもカワイイのが、いいですけけれども、ですね。

英語字幕付きのスペイン語だかポルトガル語だか版もあるということは、世界に流れていたということですよね。オドロキの一言です。
きっと、みんなビックリしたでしょうね。
日本のアニメ、昔から、すごいです。
