今回ご紹介するのは、「The Wizard of OZ」 L.Frank.Baum です。
画像1011 008.jpg

(1)OXFORD BOOKWORMS LIBRARY

(3)原書のThe Wizard of OZの版

Dorothy wants to go to home to Kansas ,but she doesn't know how to get there. She need help. " Go to the Emerald City ," the Witch of North tells her," and ask theWizard of Oz to help you."

Then Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, the Tin man, and the Cowardly Lion, but they need help too. So they all take the yellow brick road to the Emerald City. But what are they going to find there? Who -or what - is the famous Wizard of Oz ?

THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD

Dorothy and Toto walked along the yellow brick road for a long time. When they were tired, they stopped in a field by the road. Not far away , there was a scarecrow, and Dorothy and Toto walked across to look at it.

"Good day " said a Scarecrow.
" Oh! " said Dorothy. "You can speak! "
" Of course I can speak," said the Scarecrow. " But I can't move, up here on this pole・・・I'd like to get down . Can you help me? "

Carefully, Dorothy took the Scarecrow off his pole.
" Thank you very much," said the Scarecrow. He moved his arm and legs, and straw went everywhere.
" Who are you?", he asked. "And where are you going?"

" I'm Dorothy, and I'm going to the Emerald City. I want to go home to kansas, but I don't know the way. I'm going to ask the Wizard of Oz for help."

" Where is the Emerald City?" asked the Scarecrow. " And who is the Wizard of Oz? I don't know anything, you see, because I don't know anything, you see, because I have no brains know anything, you see, because I have no brains in my head- only straw."

I have no brains:haveの使い方に留意 I have no ideaーわからないなー

"Oh dear! " said Dorothy. " I'm very sorry."
" I would very much like to have some brains," the Scarecrow said. "Can  I go to the Emerald City with you? Perhaps the Wizard of Oz can give me some brains. What do you think? "

" I don't know," said Dorothy. " But yes, please come with me. He's a famous wizard, so perhaps he can elp you." She felt very sorry for the Scarecrow.

She felt very sorry for the Scarecrow. :

5 THE SAVING OF THE TIN WOODMAN

When Dorothy woke up the sun was shining through the tree.
" We must go and look for some water," she said to the Scarecrow.
" Why do you want water?" he asked.
" To wash my face, and to drink," she replied.
" It must to be difficult to be a real person," said the Scarecrow thoughtfully,  " for you have to sleep, eat, and drink. However, you have brains and it is worth a lot of trouble to be able to think."

Tin Wooodman:
It must to be difficult to be a real person:

They left the little house and walked through the trees untill they found a little river of clear water.
When Dorothy had finished eating, drinking, and  washing, she was surprised to hear a strange noise nearby.

"what was that?" she asked quietly.
”I don't know," replied the Scarecrow." but we can go and see."
Just then another noise  reached their ears, and the sound seemed to come from behind them. They turned and walked through the forest until dorothy discovered something shining in the light. She ran to the place, and then stopped quickly.

One of the big trees had been partly cut through and standing beside it, with ax in his hands, was a man made completely of tin.

with ax in his hands:オノを両手で持って
a man made completely of tin;全てがブリキで出来ている男

" Did you make a noise? " asked Dorothy.
" Yes," ansered the tin man, "I did. I've been making noises for more than a year but no one has ever heard me before, or come to help me.

I've been making noises for more than a year but no one has ever heard me before, or come to help me.:

" What can I do for you? " asked Dorothy gently- because the man's voice  made her feel sad.
" Get some oil and oil me , he answered. " I cannot move my legs or arms. If I am oiled I shall soon be all right again. You will find some oil in my house."

Get some oil and oil me:オイルを取ってきて、私にオイルをさしてくれ
If I am oiled I shall soon be all right again:

Dorothy found the oil and then asked him where she should put it.
" Oil my neck first. replied the Tin Woodman.
So she oiled his neck while the Scarecrow held his tin head and moved it gently from side to side - until the Tin Woodman could move it by himeself.

1.  The Cyclone
Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle
Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer's wife.  Their house was small, for the lumber to build it had to be carried by wagon many miles.

There were four walls, a floor and a roof, which made one room; and this room contained a rusty looking cookstove, a cupboard for the dishes, a table, three or four chairs, and the beds. Uncle Henry
and Aunt Em had a big bed in one corner, and Dorothy a little bed in
another corner.

There was no garret at all, and no cellar--except a small hole dug in the ground, called a cyclone cellar, where the family could go in case one of those great whirlwinds arose, mighty enough to crush any building in its path.  It was reached by a trap door in the middle of the floor, from which a ladder led down into the small, dark hole.

When Dorothy stood in the doorway and looked around, she could see nothing but the great gray prairie on every side.  Not a tree nor a house broke the broad sweep of flat country that reached to the edge of the sky in all directions.

The sun had baked the plowed land into a gray mass, with little cracks running through it.  Even the grass was not green, for the sun had burned the tops of the long blades until they were the same gray color to be seen everywhere.

Once the house had been painted, but the sun blistered the paint and the rains washed it away, and now the house was as dull and gray as everything else.

When Aunt Em came there to live she was a young, pretty wife.  The sun and wind had changed her, too.  They had taken the sparkle from her eyes and left them a sober gray; they had taken the red from her cheeks and lips, and they were gray also.  She was thin and gaunt, and never smiled now.

When Dorothy, who was an orphan, first came to her, Aunt Em had been so startled by the child's laughter that she would scream and press her hand upon her heart whenever Dorothy's merry voice reached her ears; and she still looked at the little girl with wonder that she could find anything to laugh at.

HOME AGAIN
画像1011.jpg

AUNT EM had just come out of the house to water the cabbages when she looked up and saw Dorothy running towards her.
" My darling child ! " she cried, forlding the little girl in her arms and covering her face with kisses.
" Where in the world did you come from? "

"From the Land of Oz," said Dorothy gravely. "And here is Toto, too. And oh, Aunt  Em!  I'm so glad to be at home again!"

☆☆

Youtube

『The Wizard of OZ』、
『Alice's Adventures in Wonderland』

『The Wizard of OZ』

ただ、題が、Somewhere over the rainbow なのか over the rainbow なのか当方はよくわかなかったので、over the rainbow にしておきました。
