No Tooth, No Qurter !  (STEP INTO READING)他

今回ご紹介するのは、STEP INTO READING の本、三冊です。
STEP INTO READING はRAMDOM HOUSEから出ている児童向けのstep by step の読書絵本で、５段階に区分けされています(PreschoolからGrade2~3まで、幼稚園から小学３年低学年用までです)。

その中から、今回、
STEP4 No Tooth, No Quarter !
STEP3 HELEN LELLER COURAGE IN THE DARK 
STEP3 THE TITANIC
の三冊を、採り上げさせていただきます。

アメリカのネイティブ子供向けの本で、興味深い事象が扱われていますので、わりとスムーズに自然な英語表現を吸収することができるかと思います。
ノン・フィクション系もけっこうあるのも、一つの特徴かと思います。

STEP INTO READING の本には、難しい単語や長い構文はあまり出てきませんので、中学生３年生でも、わりと楽しく読み進められると思います。分量も、それほど多くなく、絵部分が大きい、薄いA4サイズのソフトカバー体です。

全編をご紹介することはできないのですが、さっそく覗いてみることにしたいと思います。

STEP4
No Tooth, No Quarter !

こちらは、tooth fairy のお話です。日本ではほとんどなじみがない妖精ですが、枕の下に抜けた歯（乳歯）を置いておくと、かわりにプレゼント（一般にはコイン）を授けてくれるらしいです。
Quarter は、アメリカの２５セント・コイン（１ドルの1/4）を指しています。

Two tooth fairies were sitting on a branch.
The small one was reading her report card.

Dog Tooth ..........................F
Fake Vampire Teeth..............F
Cracked Tooth With Fillings.... F

" All F's again ! " she wailed.

Her friend patted her on a back. " Don't worry, " she said to the little tooth fairy.
" You'll find a good tooth soon.

" I'd better ! If I don't find a perfect tooth tonight, Qeen Dentena will take away mywings. And I won't be able to go to the Decay Prevention Ball ! "

So the little tooth fairy flew of to look for a perfect tooth.

Soon she came to a schoolyard where some kids were playing dodge ball.

" Think fast, Walter ! " A girl threw the ball at the boy in the middle.

Walter jumped out of the way.
”Missed　! " he shouted. But he landed he tripped and fell over a rock.

" Look !" Walter picked himself up, grining.
" My tooth fell out ! " he held it up and then put it in his pocket.
" This goes under my pillow tonight ! "

" At last ! " whispered the tooth fairy.
" This is my lucky day ! I'll follow him home after school. "

And that's just what she did.
She waited out side his house until dark.
She watched the lights go out one by one.

Soon there was nothing but a soft blow coming from one window.
The tooth fairy flew in.
She squeezed under Walter's pillow and felt around.

All she found was a letter. It said:


" NO TOOTH ! " the tooth fairy cried.
" Oh, no ! "

STEP3
HELEN LELLER COURAGE IN THE DARK
ヘレン・ケラーのお話は、ほとんどの方がご存知だと思います。こちらは、彼女の全生涯を記した伝記です。


裏表紙の紹介文には、こうあります。

Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880, on a firm in Alabama.
Mr. and Mrs.Keller were thrilled with their beautiful, healthy baby.
But them something terrible happened.

When little Helen was a year ad a half old, she became very sick. She had a hagh fever. Her parents were afraid that she would die.

A few days later, the fever was gone.
But something was still very wrong.

Littke Helen could no longer see or hear.
The illness had left her blind and deaf.

The Kellers' sweet little girl became a wild child.
She kicked and scratched her parents when they tried to touch her.

She yelled and screamed in a loud voice.
How else could she let anyone know when she was hungry or tired or afraid ?

この後も、ヘレンと両親の苦悩の日々は続きます。
両親は、ドクターにGraham Bell(電話の発明者で、夫人が盲人)を紹介してもらい、彼を通して知ったボストンにあるPerkins特別施設に、思い切って手紙を書きます。
そして、その手紙に答えて、はるかアラバマにいるHelenのもとに、Anne Sullivan（＝Annie）先生が来ることになったのです。

この本には、彼女の全生涯が、やさしい英語で、書かれています。
ヘレン・ケラーの実話は、数多くの本や映画にもなり、彼女自身の自叙伝もありますが、やさしい英語の本で読んでも、胸にジンとくるお話です。

THE TITANIC

初航海で海に沈んだ、あのタイタニック号の物語です。映画も大ヒットしましたから、多くの方が覚えておられることでしょう。
この本では、沈んだタイタニック号の残骸の発見のお話も語られています。

The whole world is talking about an amazing new ship.
It's name is the TInanic.

The ship is getting ready to leave on its first trip across the ocean.
It is going all the way from England to America.

Newspaper called the Titanic " The Woder ship. "

They say it is like a floating palace.
The Titanic has restaurants, a post officeーeven a gym with toy camel to ride.

The Titanic is the biggest ship the world has ever seen.
The ship is almost four city blocks long and is as tall as an eleven-story building.

Best of all, experts say the Titanic is the safest ship ever.
They say it cannot sink.
Why?
The ship doesn't have one bottomーit has two. One is inside the other.

最新の二重底形式の船だったようですが、あっけなく沈んでしまったのは、歴史の示す通りです。
タイタニックの航海の様子、難破の瞬間、乗員の救出などが、史実にそって、やさしい英語で書かれています。最後の章は、海に沈んだタイタニック号発見のお話です。

駆け足で、STEP３～４の３冊を見てまいりましたが、
STEP into Reading
面白い本も多いと思います。

少し、一冊の文章量が少ない面もあるのですが、かえって集中して読めるという部分もあるかと思います。

グッピーさん、ようこそ。ありがとうございます。
ず～とサボっていて、このページのままなのですが、この手紙は、当方も、ぜひともだしたかったのです。

ふだんは英語・英語されておられると思いますので、息抜きに絵本などいかがですか？
児童書とか？
どなたにも、無理やりオススメするのですね。
なるべく早く新作紹介に着手するつもりです。
