STORIES FOR Seven Year Olds

今回ご紹介しますのは、
A treasury of
[STORIES FOR Seven Year Olds」 Kingfisher出版社 です。

タイトルから明らかなように、７才の子供向けのお話を集めた、短編選集です。
選者は、 EDWARD &NANCY BLISHEN

この「STORIES FOR～　～才」シリーズは、４才～８才まで、年齢ごとに各１冊ずつ、出版されています。
他にも、Kingfisher treasury series としては、ANIMAL STORIES を始め、
多くの物語が出版されています。

この本には、目次にありますように、１９の物語が収録されています。
いずれも、ファリーテイル：おとぎ話的なものなのですが、みたこともない面白い物語が多く収録されています。タイトルだけでも、ワクワクしますね？

９月４日現在、アマゾンでは新品は一時的品切れということですが、早晩、入手可能になると思います。
アマゾンで調べると、似たような名前の面白そうな本が、他にもあるみたいですね。

英語の方は、ネイティブの７才向けですから、比較的やさしいのですが、といって中学２年生がスラスラ読めるかといますと、物語によっては、少し苦労する向きもあるかと思います。

全体的には、やさしいのですが、ネイティブ向けですので、慣用表現や単語など、日本の教科書などではあまり目にしないものも、けっこう含まれています。
その点では、若干、辞書のごやっかいにならざるを得ない部分があると思いますが、それを補ってあまりある、面白い本かと思います。

さて、前置きはこれくらいにしまして、さっそく、この中から次の２つのお話を選んで、そのさわりを覗いてみることにしましょう。

２． THE FAIRY SHIP (Alison Uttley)

では、まず１．から。

１． LION AT SCOOL ( Philippa Pearce)

 Once upon a time, there was a little girl who didn’t like going to school. She always set off late. Then she had to hurry, but she never hurried fast enough.
 One morning, she was hurrying along as usual when she turned a corner, and there stood a lion, blocking her way. He stood waiting for her. He atared at her with his yellow eyes. He growled and when he growled, the little girl could see that his teeth were as sharp as skewers and Knives. He growled: “ I’m going to eat you up “
“ Oh, dear! “ said the little girl, and she began to cry.

Then she had to hurry, but she never hurried fast enough.：それで、彼女は急がねばならなかったのですが、決して（間に合うほど）十分には急ぐことはなかったのです
Growle：うなる
Skewers：串状の歯の付いた肉の突き刺し具(日本で言うフォーク)

“Wait ! “ said the lion. ” I haven’t finished. I’m going to eat you up UNLESS you take me to school with you.”
“Oh,dear! “ said the little girl. “ I couldn’t do that. My teacher says we musn’t bring pets to school.”
“ I’m not a pet,” said the lion. He growled again, and she saw that his tail swished from side to side in anger―swish! Swish! “ You an tell your teacher that I’m a friend who is coming to school with you,” the said. “ Now shall we go? ”
 The little girl had stopped crying. She said:” All right. But you must promise two thngs. First of all, you musn’t eat anyone:it’s not allowed.”
“ I suppse I ca growl? “ said the lion.
“ Isuppse you can,” said the little girl.
“ And I suppse I can roar? ”
“Must you? Said the little girl
“ Yes,” said the lion.
“ Then I suppose you can,” said Litlle girl.
“And what’s the second thing? “ asked the lion.
“ You must let me ride on your back to school.”
“Very well, “ said the lion.

First of all：まず最初に
I suppse I can growl?：うなるのはかまわないんだね？
Roa：吼えるr
Must you?：どうしても吼えないとだめなの？
ride on your back：背中に乗せる

He crouched down on the sidewalk and the little girl climbed on his back. She held on by his mane.Then they went on together toward the school, the little girl riding the lion..
The lion ran with the little girl on his back to school. Even so,they were late.The little girl and the lion went into the classroom just as the teacher was calling the roll.

 The teacher stopped calling the roll when she saw the little girl and the lion. She stared ato the lion, and all the other children stared at the lion,wondering what the teacher was going to say. The techer said to the little girl: ” You know you are not allowed to bring pets to school.”
 The lion began to swish his tail― swish! Swish! The little girl said:” This is not a pet. This is my friend who is coming to school with me.”

 The taecher still stared at the lion, but she said to the little girl:” What is his name,then? “
“ NOIL,” said the little girl. “ His name is Noil. Just Noil.”
She knew it would not be a good idea to tell the teacher that her friend was a lion, so she had  turned his name backward:LION-NOIL.
 The teacher wrote the name down in her rollbook:NOIL. Then she finished calling the roll.
“ Betty Small,” she said.
“ Yes,” said the little girl.
“ Noil,” said the teacher.
“ Yes,” said the lion.

エエトですね。
そんなはずはないだろう！、と皆さんも突っ込みたくなると思うのですが、
これは、あくまで、子供さん向けの、おはなしですから、ですね。

はたして、このあとリトルガールとライオンはどうなるのでしょうか？
気になって、夜も眠れませんね。

２． THE FAIRY SHIP (Alison Uttley)

こちらの物語の方が少し手ごわいと思います。少し注釈を少なくしてみましたので、
なるべくアタマから読んで、多少のことは目をつぶって、読み進めてみて下さい。

Little Tom was the son of sailor. He lived in a small whitewashed cottage in Cornwall, in England, on the rocky cliffs looking over the sea. From his bedroom window, he could watch the great waves with their curling plumes of white foam and count the seagulls as they circled in the blue sky. The water went right away to the dim horizon, and sometimes Tom could see the smoke from ships like a dark flag in the distance. Then he ran to get his spyglass, to get a better view.

 Tom’s father was somewhere out on that great stretch of ocean, and all Tom’s thoughts were there, follow him, wishing for him to come home. Every day, he ran down the narrow path to the small bay and sat there waiting for the ship to return. It was no use to tell him that a ship could not enter the tiny cove with it’s sharp needles or rocks and dangerous crags. Tom was certain that he would see his sailor father step out to the strip of sand if he kept watch. It seemed the proper way to come home.

物語の途中までばかりで、あとの部分がなくて申し訳ありませんが、
「STORIES　FOR　Seven Year Olds 」いかがでしたでしょうか？

ところどころ、難しい表現の出てくる物語はあるのですが、楽しい物語がいっぱいにつまった、やさしい英語の本（７才向けですから）です。
この７才を始め、４才～８才まで、各年齢１冊、計５冊の本が出ています。

たまには、こういう短編集をお手元におかれて、「読書の秋」を満喫されてはいかがでしょうか？
いずれにしても、リトルガールとライオンの顛末が、気になりますね。

洋書の方が、子供思いの作品が多いような気がしますね。

ふぢたしょうこさま、イラストのお顔を拝見できて、うれしいです。ありがとうございます。

当方、日本の児童書や絵本を読んだことがほとんどないので、不明なのですが、設定が面白い、子供目線の児童書は多いと思います。

もう少し買い物ができる甲斐性があれば、身ぐるみをはがし隊隊員に名乗り出るのですが・・・。津山方面の某・つれづれ・某ブログで、よくお見かけしていますので、つい、ですね。

ビタースイートさま、tamanossimoさま、たびたびお越しいただき、やるき十分で、次のホンの構想（そんなおおげささなものではなく、棚からヒョイと出してくるだけですが）が膨らみつつあります。

何とか、２～３日以内にもうひとつ、と考えております。

若くもないですが、毛虫は家の前にうじゃうじゃおりますので。
英語は仕事で読むことはあるのですが、物語は全然読まないからか、頭の中で日本語に置き換えないとどうにも読めない感じで、意外と読めないものだなーと思いました。

禮　（Rei）さま、奈良行、３万歩も歩かれた１日目が終わり、お疲れ様でした。サンダルでこれだけお歩きになられるとは！

２日目の行程が大変気になっております。

橿原神宮、石舞台、棚田とくれば、次は大神神社→箸墓→石上神社か、この辺でぐっと「鹿」にご登場願うのか、どちらかであろうと勝手に予測していますが、結果は、次のブログで拝見します。

楽しい旅のようですね。

家の前に毛虫がウジャウジャいるという理由が今ひとつわからないのではありますが、

それは、大変、ですね。
一大事です。
しかも、おうかがいしていると、毎年なんですね、ソレ。
一大事です。

仕事で英文を見ておられても、そうお感じになるものですか？不思議ですね。
洋書の絵本は、インテリアにもピッタリですので、リビングの一角に、ラビット君など、いかがですか？
ここが和むと思います。

マチャ、さま。
ブログ更新と、ブログめぐりに、励んでおります。
それにしても、いく先々の皆さんのブログ、何万ナイスの方が多く、ビックリしますね。
当方ですと、１万記事を書かないと、１万ナイスに到達しないのですから、エライ計算です。

もっとも、マチャさまがいらして下さる前は、２カ月間ゼロナイスブログだったのですから、ゼロ→３０台、はそれなりに上昇しているかと。
