名探偵 Nate the Great

名探偵Nate the Great 君に、ご登場いただきましょう。

彼が広く世に知られたのは、1977年ですが、以来30年以上、
大人になることもなく、Great な坊ちゃんとして、活躍されてい
るようです。えらいですね。

私は彼の年齢を知りませんが、小さな子供であると思います。
自分を Great と言い切る、素直な子供です。
彼の正体は、私には定かでありません。

そこで、自ら、自己紹介をしてもらうこととします。

My name is Nate the Great.
I am a detective.
I work alone.
Let me tell you about my last case:
I had just eaten breakfast. It was a good breakfast.
Pancakes, juice, pancakes, milk, and pancakes.
I like pancakes.
The telephone rang.
I hoped it was a call to look for lost diamons or pearls or a million dollas.
It was Annie.
Annie lives down the street.
I know Annie did not have diamonds or peals or a million dollars to lose.
”I lost a picture,” she said.
”Can you help me find it? “
”Of course, “ I said.

いかがでしょうか。
Nate the Great は、探偵で Great な Nate 君が活躍する、ほほえましいシリーズです。
彼の言動(英文)はちょっぴりウィットがあり、名探偵の雰囲気があります。

このシリーズの英文は、一文が非常に短いのが特徴です（子供だから、かも）。
全体の分量も、そう多くありません（上の文が約3頁分で、全体で50~60頁）。
熟語もわかり易いものが多く（(look for さがす)、接続構文もホンの少ししか出てきませんから、
中学生の初期段階でも、楽しく読めるものと思います。

どのように、この lost picture の事件を解決するのかは、ぜひ読まれて確かめて下さい。
それほどびっくりはしないと思いますが。

もう一つ、Nate the Great and the Missing Key を見てみましょう。

I, Nate the Great, am a detective.
I am not afraid of anything.
Except for one thing.
Today I am going to a birthday party for the one thing I am afraid of.
Annie’s dog, Fang.
This morning my dog, Sludge, and I were getting ready for the party.
The doorbell rang.
I opened the door.
Annie and Fang were standing there.
Fang looked bigger than ever and so did his teeth.
But he looked like a birthday dog.

“ I can’t find the key to my house, So I can’t get inside to have the birthday party for Fang.”

今回の事件は、失くなってしまった
Annie の家の鍵の捜索のようです(missing key)。

Fang（牙）という名前の犬は、Nate 君でなくとも、
one thing I am afraid of
(私が恐れているただひとつのこと) かもしれません。

Nate 君の犬の名前もけっこう変わってますけれど。

 

Nancy Drewお嬢様よりもずっと年下の、かわいくて Great な名探偵の活躍を、
